IFAPA receives the first experimental plants to evaluate new citrus rootstocks

The Andalusian Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IFAPA) has received the first experimental plants from Agromillora Catalana S.A., marking the start of the testing phase of the project “Characterization and evaluation of citrus rootstocks tolerant to HLB, climate change, and resilience.” These plants, imported from international breeding programs, will allow IFAPA to analyze their performance under the main challenges affecting Mediterranean citrus growing. With their arrival, a work program begins that will combine greenhouse and field trials to determine their agronomic potential and future commercial viability in Europe.

IFAPA will carry out a series of trials focused on:

Resistance to abiotic stresses, such as salinity, active limestone, drought, boron toxicity, and extreme temperatures.

Resistance to biotic stresses, evaluating tolerance to Phytophthora spp. and nematodes.

Rootstock–variety compatibility, using grafts with sweet orange, lemon, and mandarin.

Agronomic field evaluation, analyzing vigor, yield, and fruit quality.

The arrival of these first plants represents a decisive step toward identifying more resilient rootstocks capable of contributing to the sustainability and long-term competitiveness of the European citrus industry.

This activity is part of project CPP2022-009916, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union–NextGenerationEU/PRTR.
