John Deere Parla Innovation Center: The Future of High-Value Crops

Located in Parla, just a few miles from downtown Madrid, the John Deere Parla Innovation Center has established itself as a leading European hub for applied research and the development of innovative solutions for agriculture.

Created to bring innovation closer to growers while fostering collaboration among companies, startups, and technology centers, the facility is home to a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability, efficiency, and profitability of modern farming. The center is a clear example of public-private collaboration and a strong commitment to precision agriculture. It serves as a space where solutions integrating artificial intelligence, sensors, IoT systems, and digital platforms are conceived, tested, and validated. Many of these technologies are developed in partnership with industry leaders such as Agromillora, Yara, Spherag, Biome Makers, Graniot, Azud, AGQ Labs, and ID David, among others. Some of the projects currently underway include:

ATLAS Project: Smart and Automated Irrigation

Developed in collaboration with Spherag, METOS, and Azud, the ATLAS project aims to fully automate irrigation systems in high-value crops such as vineyards. By combining soil moisture sensors, weather stations, and IoT platforms, the system dynamically adjusts irrigation volumes according to real-time field conditions. The project’s objectives are clear: reduce water consumption by at least 10%, optimize fertilizer use, improve crop development, and create a scalable model that can be replicated in other farming operations.

ICARUS Project: Precision Foliar Nutrition

Led by Graniot and Yara, this project uses satellite imagery and high-resolution image analysis to deliver site-specific foliar fertilization in olive orchards. Fertilizer and biostimulant applications are adjusted according to the canopy volume of each tree. The system is integrated with machinery equipped with John Deere and Teyme technologies, enabling precise treatment applications that improve efficiency without compromising yields.

SISYPHOS Project: Efficient Fertigation in Citrus

A collaboration among Yara, Spherag, and John Deere, the SISYPHOS project seeks to document the benefits of optimized water and nutrient management compared with conventional practices in citrus orchards.

Through the use of sensors, digital platforms such as YaraPlus Fertigation, and IoT devices, the project collects key metrics including yield, carbon footprint, and water footprint, generating knowledge that can be applied to other perennial crops.

The Parla Innovation Center is far more than a technology demonstration site. It is a living laboratory where solutions are being designed to shape the future of European agriculture—solutions tailored to the challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, and the growing need for more regenerative production systems. The center provides tangible proof that the future of agriculture, built on innovation and collaboration across the value chain, is already underway.
